Gut-Healthy Recipe: Kefir Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

Who needs a pumpkin spice latte when you can savor this creamy, delicious, gut-friendly smoothie instead? 

Why You Should Love This Dynamic Duo

Kefir is a fermented milk drink, cultured from kefir grains. It is a rich source of calcium, protein and B vitamins, and is a more potent source of probiotics than yogurt.

In fact, with around 12 strains of live probiotic strains, K efir is a powerhouse of wonderful bacteria for your gut.

Pumpkin is a low calorie, nutrient-dense food. It's chock-full of beta-carotene–the antioxidant which has the potential to  slow aging, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and fortify the body against heart disease and asthma. 

Full of vitamin A, C, and zinc, pumpkin is also known as an immune system booster, and its high-fiber content acts as excellent support for the digestive system. 

These two dynamic foods, combined with mineral and antioxidant-rich spices, make for a drink that will delight your taste buds and gut alike.  

Ingredients:

1 cup plain, unsweetened Kefir (may substitute with coconut kefir for vegan option)
1/2 cup pumpkin puree
1 large banana (or 2 small)
5 ice cubes
1/2 tbsp  pumpkin pie spice (mix of cinnamon, cloves, ginger, allspice)
1 tbsp maple syrup (may substitute with 1/4 tsp stevia)
1 tsp vanilla

Some optional powerhouse add-ins: maca, turmeric, hemp hearts, chia seeds, mesquite powder. May also add 1 scoop of a vanilla protein powder of your choice 

Instructions:

1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until smooth. Makes one large or two small glasses of smoothie.
