Why Enemas Should Be Exactly 10:30 Minutes Long (& Other Silly Myths)

There's a lot of useful information online about enemas.

However, there's also a lot of information from people claiming to have specific answers based on their own experiences.

This post aims to dispel some of the answers to common questions about enemas and time.

1. What is the best time of day to do an enema?

Some people say that enemas should only ever be performed in the morning.

The fact of the matter is that enemas can be performed at any time of the day.

The reason that people often like to do them first thing in the morning is that most people find it easy to have a bowel movement in the morning before getting down with their enema kit.

It is recommended that you use the toilet before doing an enema if you feel you need to as it will make the process more comfortable. It's also generally recommended that one does not eat 30 minutes before commencing an enema.

However, the best time of day to do an enema is the time that suits you - and not just the morning (although some people do say that doing a coffee enema feels great first thing in the morning)!

2. How long should I hold/retain an enema?

We've heard people say that enemas should last a specific amount of time such as 10 minutes and 30 seconds.

The truth of the matter is that it depends on the type of enema you're doing and how comfortable you feel.

Often it's recommended to hold an enema in from 5 to 15 minutes as it takes time for the stools to soften and for any impacted matter to break away from the walls of the colon.

However, there is no set time, and if you're feeling intense discomfort, then it's recommended to end the enema as soon as possible and consult a doctor.

3. How long does it take for an enema to start working?

Precisely 8 minutes like clockwork my dear Watson!

No! Again this will all depend on your body, and anyone who says otherwise isn't worth listening to.

For some, an enema can start to work straight away. For others, it will take longer.

Typically you should start to feel the urge to go to the toilet within 5 - 10 minutes of taking an enema.

It's important to note that if you are using a chemist style enema that contains the solution in it to help remove constipation, it is recommended to see a doctor if it hasn't started working within 30 minutes as you may become dehydrated.

4. How long will an enema last?

One friend once asked if he would need to take a day off work to poop.

Don't worry - you won't be pooping forever from an enema? In most cases, the enema will be over after one session on the toilet.

When your desired holding time has been reached, or you feel a strong urge to evacuate, get up and move to the toilet. The entire enema may not come out in the first evacuation, so stay close to a bathroom for the next 30-60 minutes.

As time goes on you will find the average amount of time for your body too.
